Butterfly Knife
Anyone know if these are illegal period, or just for concealed carry. Some of the stuff I have read says one way and some stuff the other. For wisconsin btw.
Anyone unaware of what they are should watch this though, pretty awesome. Plus the spy uses one, whats better?

Depends, some knives are legal if you can legally carry a gun permit.
Some require a permit for the knife themselves.
And laws are different if it is concealed or open.
I know in PA switchblades are legal only if you can carry a gun permit

it depends on which state that you live in, i know that in illinois they are not illegal as i have owned several and yes while they are very fun they can also be very dangerous if you dont know what you are doing. so use caution and be safe if you intend upon purchasing one of the knifes. BE SAFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They're legal here. Don't know about all states. You can't carry any knife with a fixed blade over 3.5 inches in public though.
Again, that's where I live. Not sure about you. You could always call the police and ask them. No, not 911, just the local station. Lol.

It depends on your state, every state has different regulations in regards to knives (and guns) - what you can carry openly, what has to be concealed, size, etc.... talk to your local police station, they will be happy to tell you what is legal and what is not. Or you could have a lawyer look into it for you, but that would be dagnab expensive.

I don't get the point of these - can they cut mid-motion? they look fairly blunt to me, and he hits his hand with it several times.
I'd rather just carry a booey knife - much better effect if you are trying to ward off ne'er-do-wells.

They are not meant so much for self defense anymore. (although that was there original reason waaaay back). They are more of a trick knife, along with the easy of unfolding with one hand and the ability to in the right hands open just as fast as a switchblade.

I do know switchblades are mainly illegal because you can take the safety piece off and it allows the blade to launch out of the end of it. Also because lots of guys have lost the chance to have children over the years due to switchblade accidents. As for butterfly knives... they are legal in Missouri.

The legality of Balisongs concerns two factors:
1: One-handed opening capability. Customs is trying, and succeeding, to get all knives "with one-handed opening capability" classified as "switchblades", this includes flick knives with smooth opening and thumbscrews, and assisted-opening knives such as Kershaw or SOG. Balisongs would indeed fall under this category. In New York it was legally determined that balisongs were not "gravity knives" or switchblades.
2: Blade length. Many states prohibit knives with blades over a certain length, usually 3". In California it's 2".
Here's a list of states and their respective legalities concering Switchblades:

Well since Wisconsin and Illinois pretty much hate weapons I believe they are probably illegal to carry concealed.
